Energy savings in multi-functional buildings : an historical context for a case study in Rome

The historical headquarter of Italian Ministero degli Esteri (Ministry of External Affairs) in Rome named as "Palazzo della Farnesina" is a very large (about 700.000 m 3 of volume) and complex multi-functional building.The objective of present study, commissioned by Ministry of Environment, is to evaluate different energy saving strategies in this building achievable by the implementation of retrofit actions. At first, the seasonal energy consumption obtained by the existing cooling and heating systems has been estimated.

Development of an Integrated Scheme for the Energy Efficient Refurbishment of Existing Settlements

The White Paper on renewable Energy states that the total energy requirements in thedomestic sector could be reduced by 50% in EU until the year 2010, half of which could be accounts for by introducing passive and active solar technologies in buildings. A project has been undertaken with the aim to study and propose global strategies, tools and guidelines that will promote the efficient and cost effective global implementation of advanced systems and techniques in the refurbishment of existing settlements in Europe.

Upgrading and retrofitting the Field Museum, Chicago, Illinois.

The Field Museum is a world-renowned natural science institution. It is housed in an 84,000 m 2 building constructed from 1917 to 1921. Housed in the building are scientific laboratories, specimen preparation facilities, resource centers, over twenty-one million specimens, public exhibits, educational venues and lecture halls, administrative areas and restaurants. This paper presents the approaches used by The Field Museum to bring itself forward into the 21 st Century. The process started in 1993 and includes significant modifications/ replacement/modernization of the HVAC systems.

Hybrid ventilation retrofit in a school setting.

States that hybrid ventilation systems use the strengths of both mechanical and natural ventilation strategies. In the absence of many studies of the operational experience or performance monitoring of the systems, an school in Sweden was retrofitted with a hybrid ventilation system controlled by a building energy monitoring system. The main ventilation power source for this system was the six metre high solar chimneys, which were equipped with low-energy exhaust fans to supplement stack effect where necessary.

As part of IEA Annex 35 "Hybrid Ventilation in New and Retrofitted Office Buildings" a number of pilot study buildings are monitored for demonstration of hybrid ventilation performance. The monitoring programmes investigates the performance regarding indoor air quality (IAQ), thermal comfort, control strategies and energy consumption. This paper presents detailed measurements from the Danish contribution. Detailed results from short-term measuring periods are presented.

Chicago utility hits a home run.

Describes how incentives for energy efficient rehabilitation of urban multifamily buildings has now been extended to single family homes, by one of the largest utilities in the US Midwest. The utility provides grants for nonprofit housing developers to include energy efficiency measures as part of their rehabilitation work on existing multifamily buildings. The new programme provides incentives for the construction of energy efficient new single family homes. The program targets abandoned, structurally sound masonry buildings and redevelops them as high-quality affordable housing.
