Skymark 1 Air Leakage Study. Final Report.

A study was conducted to determine the air leakage rates in Skymark 1, a high rise condominium in Toronto, particularly air leakage rates of the exterior walls of "Florida Rooms" which were constructed by the enclosure of original open balconies.

Discusses the various measures used to achieve the energy-conservation aims of the Federal Republic of Germany thermal insulation regulations of 1 January 1984 and to counter the health problems that arose as a result of higher fuel prices leading to reduced domestic fuel consumption in conjunction with poor ventilation. Discusses the advantages of installing heat recovery based central air conditioning systems with filters which are eligible for tax relief.

Ventilation requirements in dwellings to prevent surface condensation.

Discusses ventilation efficiency and production rates of water vapour in residential buildings, using a three person flat of 100 m2 living area as amodel. The cold outer surfaces of a building are the critical ones regarding condensation. To avoid surface condensation, the ventilation requirement is that the air change rate must reduce the vapour content in the room air at least so far as to reduce the dew point temperature below the lowest surface temperature.

Changes in indoor climate after tightening of apartments.

The effect of reduced air infiltration rate caused by energy-saving measures has been studied by comparing the indoor climate in 25 sealed apartments with the conditions in 25 unsealed apartments in Denmark in four seasonal periods. 

Minimum air flow versus condensation. Mindestluft gegen feuchte.

Notes that the trend to airtight window constructions has upset the balance in buildings between moisture generation and its removal. Treats the factors which combine to determine whether a building will have moisture problems. Presents a procedure for the straightforward determination of the specific minimum air flow required in a particular building to prevent condensation on the inner surface of corners formed by two dimensional external walls. Determines the base air flow and the supplementary air flow for four models of representative apartments.

Multizone infiltration measurements in homes and buildings using a passive perfluorocarbon tracer method.

A miniature passive perfluorocarbon tracer system was successfully applied to the determination of air infiltration and exfiltration rates from each zone of a multizoned structure, as well as the air exchange rates between zones inhomes, multiple unit condominiums, naturally ventilated apartment buildings, and large commercial buildings with multiple air-handling systems. Use of the multizone technique in indoor air quality assessments and air-handling system stratification studies appears to be quite feasible with the availability of this measuring system.

Basic material for the instruction of occupants of homes. How, when and where to use your windows.

Airtightness measurements were carried out in ten typical Dutch dwelling complexes. In each complex four homes were measured. The IMG calculation model was used to calculate expected ventilation for these dwellings. Results of a survey of 1500 occupants on use of ventilation are given. The ventilating behaviour in 610 homes was studied in greater detail. 210 of these had some form of mechanical ventilation. Ventilation requirements are given for individual rooms.

Indoor air quality and air exchange in bedrooms.

Natural ventilation rates in bedrooms at night have been measured in retrofitted apartments. The measurements indicate clearly that air quality in bedrooms may be unacceptable in dwellings with an energy-efficient minimal ventilation rate. The air supply rates may be as low as 1 l/s/person in themedian case of bedroom size, ventilation rate and two occupants. The carbon dioxide concentration will reach a level of 4000-4500 ppm in the morning depending on the length of sleeping time in a closed room.
