A study comparing the effectiveness (as reported by occupants) of passive stack ventilation (PSY) and mechanical extract fans (MEFs) was carried out during the winter of 1996. This involved a face-to-face survey of 437 homes in England. More than 50% of the homes in the study had MEFs, 14% had PSV and 8% had humidistat-controlled MEFs (HMEFs). About 25% of the homes had either a kitchen or a bathroom with no ventilation device and 16% had no ventilation device in the home.

Performance of curtain walls for pre-heating air.

For state of the art buildings ventilation heat loss can exceed 50 percent of the total heat loss of the building. Balanced ventilation systems with heat recovery from the exhaust air lead to bjg costs for ducts. Alternatively, the incoming air of exhaust ventilation systems can be pre-heated by curtain wall facades. A newly developed simulation program for transient analysis of curtain wall systems is validated by measurements. Parameter studies for pre-heating air with curtain walls are presented. Location, orientation, construction, and geometry are considered.

Controlling sound transmission through concrete block walls.

This Update discusses the various factors that affect sound transmission through different types of concrete block walls, including single-leaf walls, double-leaf walls and walls with gypsum board attached. Knowledge of these factors will assist construction practitioners to design and build walls with high levels of acoustic performance economically.

Sound isolation and fire resistance of assemblies with fire stops.

This Update examines various fire-stopping techniques that meet the intent of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) with respect to fire resistance and that do not adversely affect the sound isolation of the wall assembly. The information is derived from the results of an industry-sponsored consortium project led by the National Research Council's Institute for Research in Construction (IRC).

Numerical simulation of volatile organic compounds dispersion emitted from flooring materials in buildings.

This paper deals with the simulation of VOCs concentration dispersion emitted from flooring material, with the purpose of understanding vocs emission and dispersion mechanisms. A test chamber is examined, whose flooring material emits a number of VOCs. Given the area specific ventilation rate and considering as boundary conditions experimental data for the examined compounds concentration, the dispersion of the vocs concentrations is examined, for two cases, steady state conditions and transient state conditions.
