Main environmental studies are today, outdoor air quality, but not indoor air quality though there is mounting evidence that exposure to IAQ is the cause of excessive morbidity and mortality.Research within the areas of developing countries has had a low priority during the last half century compared with research on ambient air or industrial air.

This paper, on the basis of existing literature, sums up the factors that influence the human perception of air movement and it also tries to specify in general terms when air movement is desirable and when it is not.

Plenum fans in HVAC equipment : the good, the bad, and the ugly

This paper provides an overview of the benefits of plenum fans and a detailed discussion of some of the pitfalls. After covering some of the benefits leading to extensive use of plenum fans, included is a brief discussion of the major complaint expressed about plenum fans, which is that plenum
fans are less efficient than housed fans. Finally, the bulk of the paper covers problems that can result from poor design practices, sloppy construction, and careless handling.

Overview of existing guidance and ventilation approaches for control of diesel exhaust inside locomotive facilities

This paper provides an overview of existing guidance, regulations, and design approaches to control diesel exhaust from locomotives operating in buildings. First, design guidance and standards for exposure to major components of diesel exhaust are reviewed. Next, issues regarding engine design, fuel composition, and outdoor emissions control strategies and their potential impact on current and future indoor emissions are discussed. Ventilation approaches that have been implemented in existing facilities are also presented.

Displacement ventilation

Advantages and drawbacks of a Displacement Ventilation system are presented in this paper, in comparison with the traditional "mixing" ventilation cooling systems.

Dampness in buildings as a risk factor for health effects, EUROEXPO : a multidisciplinary review of the literature (1998 - 2000) on dampness and mite exposure in buildings and health effects

Both in domestic and public environments, dampness in buildings is a risk factor for health effects. A European group of scientists has reviewed the literature on that subject including mite exposure over the period 1998-2000. That review has shown that there is a huge need for multidisciplinary reviews in scientific papers including associations between indoor environmental factors and health effects.

A better way to predict comfort

Standard 55-2004, on thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy was recently published and approved by ASHRAE and ANSI. This article gives an overview of the key features and limits of applicability of that standard.

Sick building syndrome in Mauritius: a need for concern

During the past few decades various symptoms and illnesses have been attributed to nonindustrialindoor environments. Problems associated with the indoor environment are acommon health issue faced by clinicians; generally, these complaints are regarded as beingdue to sick building syndrome. Mauritius is a small island with a subtropical climate.Mauritius is also a country where the prevalence of bronchial asthma among the population ishigh. No data on the sick building syndrome were available for Mauritius.
