Insulation and solar control in island servic buildings

The study of a hotel to be built under the mild climate of Madeira Island, Portugal, is presented. The program DOE-2.1E was used for the thermal load simulation, using as climatic input a Typical Year file constructed for this case. The simulation for the base building showed low heating loads and high cooling loads, of which a very important fraction derives from solar gains.

Experimental and numerical studies on indoor air quality in a real environment

This paper deals with the relevance of Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) results confronted to measurements carried out in real environment. Experimental tests have been undertaken in a room and in a kitchen of an experimental house. Although the wall surface temperatures and the air intake temperature have not been imposed, the air change rates have been controlled during the measurements. Moreover, since measurements have been
carried out in a real environment, air leakage has occurred at the walls.

Solar cooling in Madrid: experimental results obtained to partial load during 2003 summer

This paper provides experimental results derived through field testing of a partial load solar energized cooling system in Madrid during the summer period of 2003. Solar hot water was delivered by means of a 50 m2 array of flat-plate collectors to drive a single-effect (LiBr/H2O) absorption chiller of 35 kW nominal cooling capacity. Thermal energy was stored in a 2 m3 stratified hot water storage tank during hours of bright sunshine.

A friendly tool for the assessment of thermal environments

The enhancement of the know-how of the thermal environment has leaded to the formulation of more rational methods for the evaluation of the thermal responses of people. Nevertheless the improvement in human body heat exchange modelling resulted in more complex algorithms making difficult an easy assessment of thermal environments, especially for the beginners. Moreover the assessment interpretation according to the regulations in force is not trivial.

Energy performance regulations as a tool for the performance assessment of buildings: keep it simple!

In principle, there is a strong consensus that energy performance regulations should be as simple as possible. In practice, several of the existing procedures are lengthy and far from easy to quickly understand. The paper tries to clarify the various challenges for achieving the required quality. Specific attention is given to summer comfort issues and passive and low energy cooling.

A nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation of evaporation

The net evaporation process is investigated by performing non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The transient density, temperature and pressure profiles are statistical calculated, and the net evaporation flux is obtained from molecular level. With Hertz-Knudsen- Labuntsov equation, the evaporation coefficients based on nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are computed and compared with the data calculated by the equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and the transition state theory.

Traditional Indian architecture - The future solar buildings

Built environment is a manifestation of the technological innovation. The way technologies are applied in design and construction of buildings, have direct implications on the amount of energy consumed. In modern context buildings represent enclosed, isolated boxes/systems where environment is artificially controlled. This requires considerable energy. A problematic relationship between architecture and technology is evident. A large part of Indian Subcontinent has for majority of year ample Sun- renewable, nonpolluting, abundant and direct source of all present natural cycles on earth.

A preliminary study of hygrothermal performance of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks under hot humid climate of Thailand

This paper reports field investigation of the hygrothermal performance of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks (ACC) compared to other wall construction materials. The study was conducted under the tropical climatic conditions of Thailand where this debatable issue had not been yet seriously investigated. To this end, three small houses were built. The dimensions of each were 2.4 m x 2.4 m x 2.3 m.
