Turbulent airflow in a room with a two-jet heating-ventilation system - a numerical parametric study.

The two-dimensional turbulent airflow generated by two non isothermal plane wall jets in a compartment is numerically investigated over a wide range of supply airflow rates. The low-Reynolds-number turbulence model of Nagano and Hishida, assembled in a finite-volume-based numerical code, is used after a previous validation study involving several other formulations of the k-e model.

Duct leakage in European buildings: status and perspectives.

A large number of modem European buildings are equipped with ducted air distribution systems. To investigate the implications of duct leakage, a field study was performed on 42 duct systems in Belgium and France. The measurement data confirm the findings of the few earlier experimental investigations on these matters in Europe. In our sample, the leakage rate appears to be typically three times greater than the maximum permitted leakage adopted in EUROVENT 2/2 (Class A).

Ventilation and indoor air quality in indoor ice skating arenas.

There are thousands of indoor ice rink arenas in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The combustion byproducts from the feel-powered ice resurfacing equipment are a potential health risk to both athletes and spectators. A field survey of ten ice rink arenas in Greater Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia, indicates that the fuel type used by the resurfacer as well as the air exchange rate, the air distribution method, and the operation strategy of the ventilation system are significant contributing factors to the indoor air quality (JAQ) .

Local Dynamic Similarity Model of Cross-VentilationPart 2 - Application of Local Dynamic Similarity Model

The proposed local dynamic similarity model of cross-ventilation predicted ventilation flow rates more accurately than the conventional orifice flow model assuming constant discharge coefficients when discharge coefficients actually decreased with change of wind direction. This model was used to develop a new method for evaluating the ventilation performance of window openings. The obstructive effect of model size on flow fields in a wind tunnel was avoided by installing the opening parallel to the wind tunnel floor.

Estimating Wind Frequency for Natural Ventilation at Remote Sites

Using the wind pressure difference method to estimate the cross ventilation potentials of a building at a particular site, the appropriate wind frequency data at the building site are important (Aynsley et al, 1977, Su, 2001). This study investigated wind frequency data available from the data recording site at Auckland airport and discusses how to obtain the building site wind frequency data from the original wind frequency data recorded from such sources.

Responses of disabled, temporarily ill and elderly persons to thermal environments.

This paper presents a part of the findings of ASHRAE research project RP-885, a literature review on the responses of disabled persons to thermal environments. An extensive literature review on the impairment of thermoregulation and thermal sensation has been carried out to collect data on physical, physiological, and psychological responses of persons who suffer from various disabilities, diseases, or genetic disorders, as well as those taking medications, and elderly persons.

Physical model of an air conditioned room (space) for control analysis.

This paper describes a procedure for deriving a dynamic model of an air-conditioned room (space) by applying physical laws to it. The room under control is divided into five zones. The dynamics of each zone can be described by a lumped-capacity model, and a total of I 5 linear differential equations can be obtained. The model parameters derived from this procedure can be numerically related to the overall heat transfer coefficients for the room, and the various significant time constants associated with the room envelope.
