OPENING DESIGN TO IMPROVE THE NATURAL VENTILATION PERFORMANCE OF HIGH-RISE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

Increase in high-rise residential building has changed the envelope of residential building to aluminumcurtain wall which requires the use of the single-sided ventilation to be used instead of the crossventilation. It causes dissatisfaction mainly with indoor air velocity and ventilation volume. Therefore,the objective of this study is to improve the natural ventilation performance of high-rise residentialbuilding by opening design. To improve the natural ventilation performance in single skin faade, theeffect of different types of window will be evaluated.

MEASURING TECHNOLOGY AND ASSESSMENT OF NATURAL VENTILATION APPLIED IN A COMPLEX BUILDING

By natural ventilation, the air rate varies randomly. Therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the naturalventilation performance due to insufficient measured data. In the present work a complex office buildingwas taken as a study object for the experimental investigation. A measurement technology isdeveloped in this work for the assessment of the natural ventilation performance in the building.

The paper reports the first results of research carried out at the Department of Design and BuildingConstruction of the University of Palermo analysing the problems related to the design of sustainablebuilding envelopes in the Mediterranean Basin. SIMULATION OF A NOVEL HEAT PIPE/PCM SYSTEM FOR COOLING OF NATURALLY VENTILATED BUILDINGS

The paper describes the numerical simulation of a novel ventilation cooling system. The ultimate aimof the mathematical model is to facilitate the design of the system for specific buildings and climates.The model directly takes account of time dependency in that the diffusion equation for the heat flow inthe fabric of the room is solved. This approach means that important parameters (e.g. ventilationrates and internal heat gains) can be arbitrarily specified as functions of time.

Ventilation Potential: Examining the Effects of Growing Densification in the Tropics

The density of Dhaka is increasing exponentially, and with it the demand for residentialaccommodation. Rapid densification is increasing hard surfaces and changing the urbantexture, thereby escalating heat absorption. This intensifies dependency on valuableconventional energy resources, for thermal comfort.Research shows that regional climatic data differs markedly from localised microclimaticeffects within the built environment. In built-up residential areas of the city there is the lack ofnatural wind flow, one of the most important ingredients for comfort during the warmmonsoons.

Urban Canyon Influence on Building Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation driven by the combined forces of wind and buoyancy has been studiedexperimentally for a building flanked by others forming urban canyons. The steady ventilationestablished in an isolated building was observed to change dramatically, both in terms of the thermalstratification and airflow rate, when placed in the confines of an urban canyon environment. Theresulting ventilation flows and internal stratifications are presented for different combinations of windspeed, opening area and location, and canyon width (building density).

Results of Monitoring a Naturally Ventilated and Passively Cooled Office Building in Frankfurt A.M., Germany

In this article the concept of a new energy-efficient office building and results of a 3-year monitoringare described. The monitoring was performed within the German funding programme ENOB.In this building most of the offices are naturally ventilated and passively cooled. Another focus of theenergy concept is on regenerative heating.Monitoring results show that the integrated planning enabled a very low consumption of energy forheating, ventilation, cooling and lighting.

Potential of Natural Ventilation in a Tropical Climate

Sustainable architecture design for tropical climates requires the use of natural ventilation besideseveral strategies, as appropriated materials, site location, faade orientation, solar shading, etc. Theindoor thermal comfort and thermal performance of the building depends on the bioclimatic zonewhere is located. The new Brazilian Norm ABNT NBR 15220-3 has established bioclimatic zones and guidelines for low-income houses. Due to the lack or scarcity of meteorology wind data, certainregions as Amazon and Northeast coast were inserted in a same zone.
