Distribution system leakage impacts on apartment building ventilation rates.

Forced air distribution systems in residential buildings are often located outside conditioned space, for example in attics, crawlspaces, garages and basements. Leaks from the ducts to these unconditioned spaces or outside can change flows through the registers and change the ventilation rates of the conditioned spaces. In this study, duct leakage flows were measured in several low-rise apartment buildings. The leakage flow measurements and other data about the apartments were used to develop a prototype apartment building.

Multizone airflow and contaminant modelling: performance of two common ventilation systems in Swedish apartment buildings.

The goal of this work was to assess the performance of two common ventilation systems, an exhaust and an exhaust supply system, in Swedish apartment buildings. Since correct air-exchange and interzonal airflows are important for removing contaminants and improving indoor air quality, these airflows were analyzed by systematic computer calculations when selected input parameters were varied around their default values.

Stack-driven moisture problems in a multi-family residential building.

Wintertime window condensation problems were reported on the top two floors of a five-story, multi-unit residential building in central New York (7200, base 65° F heating degreedays ). Initially built as a five-story brick hotel at the turn of the century, the building was rehabbed into low-income apartments in the early 1990s. Ventilation in each unit consisted of operable windows and a single bath exhaust. Condensation on windows was severe enough to support fungal contamination in the first winter of occupancy.

Integrated solar thermal upgrading of multi-storey housing blocks in Glasgow.

This paper will describe a proposal to upgrade a thermally sub-standard multi-storey housing block (Type T84), where height and climatic exposure are significant, to demonstrate the effectiveness of passive, active and hybrid solar techniques to minimise space and water heating loads while enhancing the quality of air in both shared and private spaces.

Thermal performance of a passive-designed dwelling unit and the influence of residents' dwelling condition.

Passive and low energy houses are not yet widespread throughout the world. One of the reasons is that their actual performance has not been clarified. In recent years, the number of houses has been increasing in Japan, however, there are very few examples of multiple dwelling building whose performance has been clarified. The annual thermal performance of two dwelling units in a multiple dwelling building in Japan is measured and their high performance is verified.

Digital control system for extreme low energy apartments.

In the frame work of IBA Task XIII, a pilot project URBAN VILLA has been realized in Amstelveen, The Netherlands, Ref. /1/. This project concerns the development of an apartment building of 42 luxurious apartments, of which 16 will have extreme low energy consumption. Success and failure of every new domestic design are ruled by the sensation of comfort, experienced by the residents. Therefore, in order to make this a successful project comfort requirements should be fulfilled.
