Purpose of the work

Presentation of the various requirements for airtightness of the building envelope arising during planning as well as the mandatory provisions resulting from standardization, regulations and certification: What can measurement service providers do to insure that the ensuing problems are identified at an early stage?

Method of approach

Summary of the experience gained over several years with air permeability measurements in consumer markets, commercial buildings and other large structures.

Content of the contribution

Standards, energy saving regulations and certifications from e.g. the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) mean that the measuring service provider must possess specialist know-how to conduct air permeability measurements at consumer markets, commercial buildings and other large structures. The issues and problems that arise are illustrated using several examples from practice. Concrete suggestions are made as to which concerns should be clarified with those involved in the construction before and during a measurement campaign to insure that it proceeds as smoothly as possible. The examples taken from actual measurement practice refer, among other things, to food markets that are subject to DGNB certification. The various objectives set for building construction and building services planning as well as the requirements of certification, standards and the energy saving ordinance are presented and evaluated against the background of the German national annex of ISO 9972.

Results and assessment of their significance

The objectives set by planners and users differ in some respects. It is clear that there is still a lack of coordinated planning between the various contract lots regarding the airtightness of the building envelope.

Conclusions

Planners, users and measurement service providers need to consult each other at an earlier stage to avoid costly reworking of the airtight building envelope at a time when it is almost completed.
