Purpose of the work

This work presents the Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre, and the Building and ductwork airtightness platform TightVent Europe. Both organisations have a long history and have performed projects that are relevant for BUILDAIR. The work gives an overview of some recent projects as an introduction to the AIVC-TightVent session.

Method of approach

Both AIVC and TightVent Europe are knowledge and dissemination platforms which collect information and create knowledge by collaboration with international partners.

Content of the contribution

The presentation will cover:

  • some history and facts of AIVC and TightVent
  • overview of projects in relation to building and ductwork airtightness, and on inspection and performance of ventilation systems
  • some examples of recent results
  • introduction to the other presentations in the session

Results and assessment of their significance

The AIVC (Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre) is the International Energy Agency's information centre on energy efficient ventilation. Since 2011, AIVC activities have been structured around projects, integrating activites and products such as publications, webinars, workshops etc. Recent projects include the development of papers giving an update on the current regulations in various countries regarding building and ductwork airtightness, and regarding ventilation, in collaboration with the TightVent Europe platform and TAAC Committee (TightVent Airtightness Associations Committee). For the ventilation status, specific attention is paid to in situ ventilation system performances, ventilation system inspection, and the influence of the Covid19 crisis. Very relevant is the substantial interest in ventilation in the EPBD revision and the mandatory part about inspection. Also, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, new research, standardisation and regulatory programmes have been initiated to make sure cross contamination in indoor environments is better controlled in the future.

Conclusions

The AIVC's main goal is to provide reference information on ventilation and air infiltration in the built environment with respect to efficient energy use and good Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), in collaboration with International organisations such as TightVent Europe. The projects result in different information tools, for example webinars, conference sessions, position papers, and technical reports with relevance for participants of BUILDAIR.
