The Energy Conservation for Buildings andCommunities Systems (ECBCS) is anImplementing Agreement among 23 countriesof the IEA (International Energy Agency) forenergy research and development in buildingsand communities. The ECBCS has nowcompleted 43 major international projectsresulting in demonstrated and adoptedtechnologies and tools with major impacts onenergy efficiency and environmental impacts inbuildings and communities. The ECBCS hasnow completed its 2008-13 strategic plan. Asof today, 10 new projects are now in place tosupport the feasibility of near-zero energy andcarbon emissions in both buildings andcommunities. This invited paper summarizesthe content of the keynote address, to highlightthe ECBCS current activities and futureresearch priorities for buildings andcommunities.The ECBCS member countries, as oftoday, include: Australia, Austria, Belgium,Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan,Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland,Portugal, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland,United Kingdom, and the United States.
