Bioclimatic approach gives attention to the design of roof since it is commonly the building element which is most exposed. Some of the most favorable roof coolingtechniques are roof ponds which appear to influence the thermal behavior of roof through different processes including evaporation, radiation and conduction.

A heat island study of Athens using high-resolution satellite imagery and measurementsof the optical and thermal properties of commonly used building and paving materials

In this study, high-spatial resolution multispectral satelliteimages collected over the metropolitan Athens area in Greece are used to generate a) a broadband albedo map depicting the albedo spatial variations across the metropolitan area, b) a vegetation cover map showingthe spatial distribution of urban vegetation and c) a daytime and night-time surface temperature map depictingthe spatial variations of the surface temperature across the city.

Design aspects and perspectives for solar control of buildings with aesthetic and efficient solar thermal collectors and photovoltaics

New solar energy systems with efficient energy output and advanced aesthetics have been developed at the University of Patras last 20 years. Among them some collector types are effective in aesthetics and energy output, as the solar collectors with colored absorbers and the stationary CPC type collectors. The building integration of air cooled photovoltaics aiming to contribute to building ventilation and of hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) systems, to provide heat and electricity, are solar devices of particular practical value.

Reduced order model for air temperature control in indoor spaces

Real-time control of comfort in indoor spaces needs models of temperature distribution and air-velocity velocityfield. Complete models, based on CFD, give this information but are improper for real-time calculations. Therefore, a reduced model is needed. This study proposesto reduce the dimension of a CFD model by first considering the velocity field fixed and solving only the energy balance equation, then putting this equation in the form of state-space and finally by reducing its orderby Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD).
