Planted circumstances and wind break techniques in the Isles of the East China sea.

In this paper the authors describe in detail the planted circumstances with wind-break effects developed in the isles of Tonaki and Aguni. tens of kilometers off the main island of Okinawa in the East China Sea; both these isles are abundunt in Fukugi, an evergreen, tall and sturdy tree of tropic origin; and the time-honored Fukugi groves have played an all-important role in protecting the people and their properties against the year-round strong winds and casual but frequent typhoons.

The Memorial Tunnel fire ventilation test program. The Full Transverse Tests

A number of tests of the Memorial Fire Ventilation Test Program were devoted to determining the effectiveness of a full-transverse ventilation system in limiting the spread of smoke and hot gases, with varying system configurations and airflow rates. The controlled fire, located at the approximate quarter point of the 2,800 ft (854 m) Jong tunnel was varied in three levels of intensity: 10, 20, and 50 megawatts (MW).

Optimising residential forced-air HVAC systems.

This study examines technical issues of residential forced-air space conditioning systems incorporating heating, ventilation and cooling in the context of increasingly energy efficient new housing. Current technologies and practices are reviewed and analyzed with a view to improvements. Potential existing and emerging technologies and strategies are examined. A comparison of conventional and improved design strategies are presented for a house with a 5 kW heating load.
