Technical and economical interest of sustainable refurbishment technologies in France, Italy and Finland

The aim of the European SSHORT (Sustainable Social Housing Refurbishment Technologies) project is to increase and promote rational and efficient use of energy in the retrofitting of social housing buildings. In this scope, one step was to evaluate with simulation studies the technical and economical interest of selected sustainable technologies on standard collective social housings in participating countries.

Review of four turbulance models using topology

The validation and development of turbulence models are still important issues related to Computational Fluid Dynamics for ventilation purposes. The present work continues the work initiated by (Voigt, 2002). Four turbulence models are reviewed, the k-e model, the k-w model and two blending models combining the k-e and the k-w model. The reason for testing the blending

SimSPARK, un environnement orienté objet décrivant les transferts de masse et de chaleur couplés dans un bâtiment : intérêt de la prise en compte des transferts d'humidité

The authors have developed a tool called SimSPARK able to automatically build dynamic zonal simulations of a building zone. In that study, SimSPARK architecture is described in details along with the current zonal model library. The applicability of this tool is also illustrated with the comparison of their zonal model in a ventilated room composed of 27 zones, with others models that don't include adsorption and desorption processes.

Occupant responsive optimal control of smart façade systems

Occupant responsive optimal control is developed for so called smart façade systems. The control optimizes the performance of the system by rotating a motorized louver slat in the cavity and ventilation dampers at the top and bottom of exterior and interi

Indoor air quality, ventilation and health symptoms in schools. An analysis of existing information

This paper is a review and an exploration of the literature on indoor air quality in schools and the reported health problems related to it.The aim of that review was to identify health symptoms the most commonly reported in schools ;then to sum-up the existing measurement data on ventilation rate, CO2 concentrations and VOCs and biological contaminants in schools ; then sto um-up the information that exists on causal relationship between pollutant exposures and health symptoms in shools.

Experiments on the ventilation efficiency of turbine ventilators used for building and factory ventilation

Turbine ventilator is an equipment that uses natural wind force to exhaust airflow ; such ventilators are widely installed in Taiwan to enhance building and factories ventilation. In theory, the combination of turbine ventilator with natural ventilation improves the indoor air quality while it decreases the reliance on air-conditioning. So that allows a reduction of the energy consumption.A variety of tests on different types of ventilators was conducted. The results proved it is helpful to increase ventilation with the installation of ventilators.

Indoor air quality and energy issues of refrigerant modulating air-conditioning systems in the tropics

Due to its simplicity in installation and maintenance on the one hand, and to its potential to conserve energy on the other hand, the refrigerant modulating air-conditioning system has become very popular. This paper presents the results of an IAQ energy audit of two buildings in Singapore that use that kind of system. The results are compared to those obtained from conventional air-conditioning systems.

Classification for the room air conditioning strategies

This paper introduces a new strategy approach for the room air conditioning including classification and terminology. The aim of the classification is not to value one strategy over another (piston, stratification, zoning and mixing strategies are presented with their advantages and drawbacks, design criteria and applications) , it is up to the designer to select the most desirable strategy for each case. A clear classification of the ideal strategies will help the evaluation of the present room air distribution methods in different operating conditions.

Scale model study of airflow performance in a ceiling slot-ventilated enclosure : isothermal condition

The experimental investigation of airflow performance in a ceiling slot-ventilated enclosure under an isothermal condition was the aim of that study. Air-flow characteristics have been analyzed via experimental data then compared to literature theoretical expressions.
The results will be used in design guidelines of ventilation system for controlling indoor environment.

Integration of airflow and energy simulation using CONTAM and TRNSYS

The impact of infiltration and ventilation flows on energy use in commercial buildings has received limited attention. One of the reasons for this lack of study is that the commonly used programs for estimating the energy use of buildings do not incorporate the interzonal airflow modeling techniques
required to adequately account for the effect of these factors on energy usage. To address this issue and provide insight into the impact of these flows, the CONTAM airflow modeling tool
