Indoor climate and energy consumption of super insulated houses in a mild climate region of Japan.

Two super insulated houses were built according to the Canadian R-2000 construction manual, in Sendai, Japan. The purpose of the construction is to clarify how much space heating energy is saved in a mild climate, and whether there are any problems related to indoor air quality and humidity in the winter and the thermal indoor environment during the summer, compared with an ordinary frame-construction house. This paper describes the measurement results of indoor temperature, humidity and indoor air quality for the winter and summer seasons, and annual energy consumption

Monitoring of automatic diagnostic sensors for oil-fired heating equipment.

In 1989, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation entered into a joint venture initiative to field  est three diagnostic devices for  oil fired heating equipment. These devices include:

  • a Flame Quality Indicator
  • a net peak stack temperature sensor
  • an oxygen sensor

Development and Investigation of a Combined Ventilation and Floor-Heating System.

The continual reduction of the transmission heat losses of residential buildings causes an increasing importance of the ventilation heat losses. Energy saving can be achieved by using a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. A great improvement is the combination of heating and ventilation in one system. In this project such a combined system was developed to reduce the energy consumption of the fans, the operating expenses and also the investment costs in comparison to existing systems. In future a high market acceptance is expected for combined heating and ventilation systems.

Testing of ventilation systems in forced warm air combustion heated houses.

This research project was performed to gather field experience with houses that had ventilation systems that were expected to be able to meet the CSA F326 Residential Mechanical Ventilation Systems Standard.

The study focused on houses that had central forced warm air heating systems along with central ventilation systems. Two of the houses had air to air heat exchangers, and two had central exhaust fans. The four houses were built between 1983 and 1986.
