Four year on site measurement of heat flow in slab on ground floors with wet soils.

This paper outlines the methods and results of a four-year project that measured heat flows through two uninsulated slab-on ground floors on nominally wet soils. One floor was on peat soil, the other on clay, and water table depths were 0.5 m to 1.0 m through most of the year. Heat fluxes were measured over the whole floor using heat flux transducers (HFT) at the concrete floor surface, and temperatures were measured by thermocouple, continuously for four years. The soil conductivities and soil temperatures were measured daily at 11 positions near one edge of the floors.

Controlling the transmission of impact sound through floors.

This Update presents guidelines for controlling the transmission of impact sound through concrete-slab and wood-joist floor systems in multi-family dwellings. It is based primarily on industry-supported research conducted by IRC.

Modelling of air flow through a slatted floor by CFD.

Measuring and modelling moisture and temperature beneath a suspended timber floor.

Temperature and relative humidity have been measured in a BRE test house to investigate the vapour content in the void beneath the timber floor. The void can be ventilated naturally or by means of a fan supplying or extracting air. The results show that air flow into and out of the void is stack dominated. The fan needs to supply or extract large volumes of air in order to disrupt this. Measurements and modelling have shown that the vapour content in the void is generally dependent on the level in external air, and that the contribution from the ground is usually small by comparison.

Thermal and ventilation characteristics in a room with underfloor air-conditioning system.

It is the objective of the present paper to investigate indoor environmental characteristics ofan office building with an underfloor air conditioning system. Thermal conditions in the roomwere monitored including horizontal and vertical temperature distributions, supply andexhaust air temperatures, and globe temperature. Indoor air quality was investigated bymeasuring carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and airborne particulate. Velocity distributionsaround a floor air terminal, and thermal comfort around a supply air terminal were alsoinvestigated.
