Long term performance of radon mitigation systems

Performance of radon mitigation systems, including active sub-slab ventilation, basement over-pressurization and crawlspace isolation and ventilation, was monitored in 12 houses in the USA during 10 years. Results are given showing the radon concentrations measured quarterly or annually. Results of the inspection of the mitigation systems and the needed maintenance and modifications of the systems to maintain and improve their performance are also reported.

Checking the compliance of residential ventilation systems in France

This paper addresses the issue of the compliance of residential ventilation systems with building regulations. Because the French building code includes requirements on performance as well as on means, the approach adopted by the French government consists in checking both airflow rates and functional measures. This paper gives an overview of the methods used and analyses the results of tests performed on 260 building projects (multi-family buildings and grouped individual houses).

Setting up a database of indoor climate measurements in recently built Belgian dwellings

One of the major sources of problems in dwellings -if not the main source- is moisture, especially due to surface and interstitial condensation on walls and roofs. For this reason, it seems important to evaluate the current standardisation and reference documents dealing with moisture and eventually to develop new assessment methods. This is the goal of the Belgian project "Moisture problems in roofs", carried out by BBRI, KUL, RUG and W&K. The first step is to collect a large number of indoor climate measurements in recently built dwellings built.

Monitoring on HR-vent hybrid ventilation project - first results

More than 700 million of measured data, 730 days, 55 dwellings: the HR-VENT hybrid ventilationdemonstration project applied in NANGIS (France) on a set of occupied collective dwellings is closely linked to its stakes. From January 2004 up to December 2005, the values of humidity, temperature, pressure, opening surface and gas appliance operation are saved every minute in all the wet rooms by specifically developed sensors.

In-situ performances measurement of an innovative hybrid ventilation system in collective housing retrofitting

To get closer from comfort and energy levels of new buildings conciliating economical viability for the big retrofitting market : the challenge opens the way to the most innovative ventilation systems. In this context was born a new hybrid ventilation system mixing demand-controlled components and low pressure assistance fan. HR-VENT is an exceptional large-scale monitoring launched in France in the suburb of Paris in order to measure the effectiveness of this new system, as well as to improve the knowledge on the hybrid and standard natural ventilation.

Experimental and numerical VOC concentration field analysis from flooring material in a ventilated room

The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of volatile organic compounds emissions from asolid flooring material on the concentration field in a ventilated room. A field study has beenconducted in the CSTB experimental house MARIA. Measurements were performed in a testroom recently equipped with a flooring material made of pine wood and under controlledventilation conditions. a-Pinene was selected as tracer from flooring VOC emissions. Velocityand temperature fields are measured in different points of the room.

Field characterization of the envelope leakage of houses for determining rehabilitation priorities

This paper presents the results of a field study conducted on 8 houses (out of a set of 31) owned and managed by a French social housing public leasing company. The central objective of our investigation was to evaluate and characterize the envelope leakage of these houses in order to propose and prioritize rehabilitation scenarios. For this, envelope leakage measurements were performed together with infrared thermography measurements.

Comparison between indoor and outdoor air contaminant levels in residential buildings from passive sampler study.

The article discusses relationships between indoor and outdoor levels of various air contaminants (nitrogen monoxide, nitrous oxides, sulphur dioxide and ozone), in ten non-smoking residential buildings in Hong Kong. The experiment used passive samplers. Estimated the source and sink strengths of the contaminants, applying an integral approach to the mass balance equation. The results indicated that the buildings acted as sinks for the contaminants. When compared to the newly developed indoor air quality guidance notes in Hong Kong, the nitrogen oxides level gave some cause for concern.
