A close up look at three retrofits.

Gives brief details of three ventilation retrofits that showed good results. The case studies are selected from a group of ten carried out by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. In each case temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide were measured to assess levels of ventilation within houses in their preretrofit condition. The measurement were taken over a 2-3 day period with normal occupancy. Short-term monitoring was also used to measure the change inventilation with the house operating in postretrofit condition.

Ontwerp gerealiseerde projecten met hybride ventilatie. Design of completed projects with hybrid ventilation.

By now hybrid ventilation systems are being used successfully in many projects. Three projects will be used to create a picture of the way in which the hybrid ventilation system has been used and of the experience with it. It can be concluded on the basis of these projects that hybrid ventilation is readily applicable and has a positive effect on comfort.

The equitable building - the genesis of modern air conditioned buildings.

The Equitable Building, which opened on 1January1948, in Portland, Oregon, was the first of a new architectural form. Technically and aesthetically it was radically different from any previous structure. It was a fully air conditioned building, clad with sheer aluminium curtain walling and huge expanses of sea green tinted sealed glass. It was fully electric with heat pumps providing heating and cooling from underground aquifers. The architect was Pietro Belluschi, an Italian immigrant who originally trained as an engineer and the mechanical engineer was J.

An investigation into thermal comfort in the summer season of Ghadames, Libya.

This paper reviews the results from a field survey of thermal comfort within two types of buildings; old (traditional) and new (contemporary), in Ghadames oasis in Libya. The survey was undertaken in the summer seasons 1997 and 1998, which were typical of the hot-dry climate of North Africa. It shows how the 237 residents responded to the environmental conditions. Questionnaires were collected from the residents of 51 buildings: 24 old buildings that employ natural ventilation systems with courtyards and 27 new buildings that employ air-conditioning systems.
