Advances in European residential ventilation systems in Nearly Zero Energy Buildings

Energy performance of buildings has been continuously and systematically improved in Europe with next step of transition to nearly zero energy buildings (NZEB) in 2019-2021. Well insulated and airtight NZEB provide challenges or opportunities – depending on point of view – for ventilation systems. Heat recovery ventilation may be expected to be major ventilation solution because in Continental and Nordic climates, it is simply impossible to build nearly zero energy buildings without heat recovery.

Will the “smart” movement lead to an improved indoor environmental quality?

The present talk will present some of the initiatives from ASHRAE regarding “smart” in general and then focus on indoor environmental activities related to “smart” ventilation. The ASHRAE society theme for 2018/19 is “Building Our New Energy Future”. In the future, our buildings will be interconnected through a “Smart Grid” in general the electricity grid.

CR18: Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in New California Homes with Gas Appliances and Mechanical Ventilation

Substantial energy is used to condition the air that enters California homes through leaks in the building envelope and ductwork - typically about a third of all heating and cooling. Reducing this through air sealing is essential to California achieving zero energy homes. However, this outdoor air also dilutes pollutants emitted inside homes and contributes to a healthy indoor environment and acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ). To address this IAQ issue, California’s Title 24 Building Standards have required mechanical ventilation in new homes since 2008.

Survey -Stakeholder consultation EPBD Article 19a feasibility study - Inspection of stand-alone ventilation systems

Article 19a of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires the European Commission to conduct a feasibility study on the possible introduction of the inspection of stand-alone ventilation systems and an optional building renovation passport. In this scope, a technical study has been contracted to a consortium formed by INIVE and BPIE who, together with a broad range of experts in the required fields, provide technical support to the Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission.

VIP 39: A review of performance-based approaches to residential smart ventilation

We are now pleased to announce the release of our  Ventilation Information Paper no 39: A review of performance-based approaches to residential smart ventilation. The paper provides an overview of the regulations and standards proposing “performance-based approaches” in five countries to promote the use of smart ventilation strategies. It shows that a favorable context exists in many countries for the development of smart ventilation strategies.
