Space Planning, Ventilation and Energy Efficiency in Offices

This work investigates the impact of space planning, interior porosity and variable occupancy on the energy use in offices that is attributable to ventilation/infiltration and air movement. TAS, Lightscape, and Excel software packages were used to simulate and analyse airflow and thermal loads in different office layouts. These layouts were created by varying the internal configurations of a base case shell.

How adaptive comfort theories might influence future low energy office refurbishment strategies

With the UK commercial sector only replacing buildings at 1-1.5% per year adaptationsto existing buildings are needed to maintain comfort levels, while reducing energy useand carbon emissions. In this study, occupants of a refurbished office recorded theirthermal sensations, assessment of lighting and air movement, perceptions of comfort andtheir reactions to adaptive opportunities. The observed mean thermal sensation votes andthe overall comfort votes correlated best with mean diurnal internal and externaltemperatures, respectively.

Surveyed Thermal Comfort in Iranian Offices

This paper presents the findings of a short-term monitoring exercise and questionnaire surveyto assess the thermal comfort conditions actually being achieved in 6 Iranian Office buildings.The findings of the questionnaire and monitoring are compared to give confidence that thequestionnaire is accurately reflecting the calculated comfort conditions obtained from thephysically monitoring and site observations.

The multi-storey blocks which constitute the main type of building in Greek urban environments, have certain common characteristics. Those characteristics include the overall building dimensions and geometry, internal room dimensions, the materials used both in building construction and insulation, the size and the arrangement of the openings on the facades, the arrangement of the balconies, the position and dimension of the staircase etc.
