VOCS MEASUREMENT IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN SOUTHERN JAPAN

The purpose of this study is to determine how levels of indoor air quality vary in elementary schools insouthern Japan. This study is based on field monitoring carried out both as short-time summermeasurements?Measurement I?and intermittent monitoring from summer to winter (Measurement II).The concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) were measured in nineteen classrooms inKagoshima City. The measurements also include carbon dioxide (CO2) and the air change rate inselected four classrooms for Measurement II.

LONG-TERM INDOOR VOCs CONCENTRATION PREDICTION CONSIDERING TEMPERATURE CHANGES PART 2 COMPARISONS BETWEEN PREDICTION AND EXPERIMENTAL VALUES

The previous paper (Part 1) proposed the concept of "equivalent material age" that uses the Arrheniusrelation and explained a method for long-term prediction of indoor volatile organic compound (VOC)concentration considering temperature dependence. This paper first describes the experimentconducted to validate the long-term concentration formula and the results of the experiment and reportson a comparison of the measured values obtained with the predicted values. The experiment wasconducted by a method conforming to JIS A1901:2003. The material measured was formaldehyde.

SURVEY ON THE ACCURACY OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY ANALYTICAL METHODS USING DNPH CARTRIDGE

In recent years, volatile organic compounds have caused chemical sensitivity by increasing indoor airpollutant concentrations. In order to solve the problem, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare ofJapanese Government established the guideline values for indoor air concentrations for 13 compounds,such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, toluene and so on.

SURVEY OF CHARACTERISITICS OF THE ODOR IN MEDICAL FACILITIES

This research clearly shows unpleasant odors in hospitals, with the goal of obtaining the basicinformation needed for formulating measures to control such odors. In the study, we conducted asurvey of the odor awareness of nursing staff members at 174 medical institutions, and compared theresults with past research related to odors in nursing homes for the elderly. 88.5% of the nurses sensedodors in hospitals. 81.0% considered it a problem and 67.2% recognized a need for improvement. Themost odorous places included sickrooms, sick wards, sanitary rooms, and lavatories.

FIELD SURVEY ON THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN THE NIIGATA AREA

The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions of the energy consumption of varioustypes of inhabited houses (e.g., wooden detached houses and condominiums) in the Niigata area. Afield survey was carried out from November 2002 to March 2005, and the energy consumption levelsfor the various uses were measured continuously. This paper describes the energy consumptions of alluses (e.g., electricity, oil, gas) in the house types.

EXPERIMENTAL AND CFD ANALYSES EXAMINING OZONE AND TERPENE DISTRIBUTIONS IN MODEL ROOMS WITH LAMINAR AND TURBULENT FLOW FIELDS

Indoor ozone has received attention because of its well-documented adverse effects on health. Inaddition to the inherently harmful effects of ozone, it can also initiate a series of reactions that generatepotentially irritating oxidation products, including free radicals, aldehydes, organic acids and secondaryorganic aerosols (SOA). The overarching goal of this work was to better understand ozone and terpenedistributions within rooms. Towards this end, the paper has two parts.

DEVELOPMENT OF ICE CONTAINER SYSTEM FOR TEMPORARY SPACE COOLING

In 2000, the domestic greenhouse gas emission in Japan was 1332 million tons of CO2, whichincreased by 8% in comparison with that of 1990. According to the Kyoto Protocol to the United NationsFramework Convention on Climate Change (COP3) held in December, 1997, Japan is obliged toreduce CO2 by 6%, compared with 1990. As a result, Japan is required to reduce by 14% (172 milliontons) on average during the period between 2008 and 2012. Particularly the emission in theresidential/commercial sector in 2000 was on the increase by 21.3%, compared with that of 1990.

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS ON HUMIDITY DISTRIBUTION IN A VENTILATED ROOM

We already have had theoretical model to predict temperature and humidity variations in a room. Manyworks have estimated the accuracy of the numerical model, but they might be influenced by the airmovement. Thus, theoretically the temperature and humidity variations should be solved with airmovement in a room. In this paper, I calculated the minute temperature and moisture distributions in aroom which has the moisture buffering effects by the porous walls. The room space is regarded asrectangular box which has two hole, inlet and outlet for ventilation.

ENERGY SAVING STUDY IN A HOTEL HVAC SYSTEM

Energy conservation is one of the key issues for environmental protection and sustainabledevelopment. Currently, about 17% of the total energy is being consumed for heating, ventilation, airconditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration in Hong Kong. Therefore, energy saving in the HVAC systemsof buildings is an important topic. In this paper, a study on the energy saving in a hotel HVAC systemwas carried out. The cooling load features of the hotel were analyzed. Retrofitting strategy of theHVAC system in the hotel was then designed.

IMPROVEMENT OF THERMAL ENVIRONMENT BY BUILDING ARRANGEMENT IN THE RIVERSIDE TOWNHOUSES

A group of 2-story detached houses is built next to a river stretching from south to north. There aremore than hundreds of houses, called the riverside townhouses in this study, in the construction site. Acoupled simulation of convection, radiation and conduction is conducted to evaluate the outdoorthermal environment from the viewpoint of building arrangement. According to the real weather data,two different wind directions (SSE and ENE) are examined.
