Residential combustion venting failure: a systems approach. Summary Report.

The project reported on here was designed to expand on previous studies of the problem of incomplete venting of the products of combustion from heating appliances in order to approach a more nearly comprehensive understanding of the extent and nature of the problem in the Canadian housing stock. The work was subdivided into seven separate but closely coordinated sub-projects

A prototype expert system for diagnosing moisture problems in houses.

In this paper the moisture-diagnosis prototype of a knowledge based expert system to assist in the identification and diagnosis of air leakage problems in residential buildings is described and discussed. This prototype system requires the user to describe the symptoms of the existing moisture problems and provide information on house characteristics. Based on additional information on the symptoms and the house, this interactive program produces a list of probable causes and recommentations for remedial action.

The development of models for the production of indoor air quality in buildings.

The National Bureau of Standards has undertaken a research effort to develop a general air quality simulation program for buildings. At present there exists three computer programs which can be used to analyse interzonal air movements in multizoned buildings and predict the level of contaminants due to a wide variety of contaminants. This paper will introduce the reader to the scientific and mathematical basis of the models, the preparation of building input data for these programs, and the use of the models for both residential and commercial buildings.

Flowrate measurements with a pressure compensating device.

In the past years the need has grown for a sensitive flowrate meter with a very low pressure drop. Such a device can be used to measure flowrates of airflows through the grilles of mechanical ventilation systems with low duct pressures. Another application would be the measurement of flowrates through the different rooms of a dwelling during a blower door test. A prototype was developed based on the very simple principle of a throttled fan. The prototype proved to be accurate and capable of measuring flows on ducts with natural ventilation.

A study of the drying potential of various wood frame wall systems used in Atlantic Canada.

The concern that a large number of housing units across Canada, and in particular, through Atlantic Canada are exposed to potential damage from wood rot due to moisture trapped within exterior walls caused a joint task force of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Canadian Home Builders Association representatives to address the "drying of walls" issue. Included in their mandate was a field research project in Atlantic Canada. The project, undertaken by Oboe Engineering Ltd. and AD1 Limited.
