In this study a parametric analysis was carried out of the interaction between louvres and various perforated mesh screens. This type of arrangement is common in through-the-wall ventilators used for natural ventilation in buildings. An airflow testing rig was used to examine the impact on louvre airflow performance of the meshes. The interaction of louvre geometries and blade inclinations with meshes of different hole sizes was also investigated experimentally.

This study established a research facility where airflow velocities, temperature, and differential pressures could be measured at the ridge of an attic. Following the construction of a test building, sensors were constructed, calibrated, and installed inside the attic. Paired tests were performed for three different ridge vent treatments; two were rolled type vents and one was a baffled vent.
The orientation, size, and nature of vents in screened exterior wall systems are important to wall performance because these characteristics affect venting, ventilation and pressure moderation. The ventilation of screened wall systems has received very little attention in Canadian building research. With funding from CMHC 's External Research Program, the B uilding Enginee ring Group at the Uni versity of Waterloo undertook an experimental and theoretical study of vents and venting in screened walls.
