A dynamical systems approach to air flows in buildings

This paper sums up the developments in geophysical fluid dynamics and ocean currents related to dynamical phenomena. Examples from study of ocean flows are given, then several methods for studying nonlinear dynamical phenomena proposed. Those dynamical phenomena can be very significant for smoke control in naturally and hybrid ventilated buildings.

Smoke reservoirs and smoke movement under solid ceilings.

In modern buildings, smoke control systems are integrated into the air supply systems. It is possible that the design of the smoke control system will dominate the design process of the air supply system. Smoke reservoir size is one of the design parameters for the smoke control system. The reservoir size has been limited to 2000-3000 m2 in both Hong Kong and UK. However, this study revealed that the smoke reservoir size should be considered in connection with the slab ceiling height of the smoke zone. The higher the slab ceiling, the larger the smoke reservoir could be.

Comments on the design of smoke management in high-rise buildings.

This paper explores the problems about the layout of smoke emission for inside hallways of high-rise buildings and underground garages, the selection of smoke emission fans and fire proof valves for basement air feed systems. With the continuous development of urban construction in our country, high-rise buildings are greatly increased in the large and middle cities, the fireproof problems have been paid great attention by all parties concerned. Authors put forward some superficial views on the design of smoke management for high-rise buildings.

Using models to support smoke management design.

A general primer pressure gradients against disease, weather, smoke.

This paper attempts to provide a general basis for implementing the principles of pressure differentials to aid in providing more user friendly air quality in buildings. This is a new technology application to be added to the commonly used air changes and filtering for cleaner air. The success story of smoke control can now be used as a major strategy against pollution and disease control in buildings. Stale bacteria-infiltrated air can also be contained to its spaces of origin and exhausted from its sources in the building.

Natural smoke filling in atrium with liquid pool fires up to 1.6 MW.

Experimental studies on natural smoke filling in an atrium induced by a liquid pool fire up to 1.6 MW were carried out. The new full-scale burning facility, the PolyU/USTC Atrium constructed at Hefei in China, was used. Five sets of hot smoke tests with diesel pool fires of 2 x 2 m placed on the floor were carried out. All openings were closed, except leaving a small vertical vent of 0.2 m high for supplying fresh air. Transient variations on the mass of the burning fuel, the vertical temperature distributions and the smoke layer interface heights were measured.
