Efficient use of natural energy sources in a art museum

Air exchange rate measurements of the National Archives Building.

Air exchange rates were measured in the National Archives Building under various combinations of temperature and wind speed. The average air exchange rate under normal operation of the HVAC system was 0.9 h-1 for an average temperature difference.

Airtightness, pressure differences and indoor climate in the experimental building Kasarminkatu 24.

Reports on pressure tests carried out on the Kasarminkatu 24 building (a museum of architecture) in Helsinki. The fans in the building were used to measure airtightness of the building envelope, and the tightness of windows and doors was measured separately by the guarded box method. The tightness of the building envelope was good (2 ach at 50 Pa). 70% of total air leakage came through the wooden roof structure, and only 5-10% through the windowstructure. Three alternative mechanical ventilation systems were also studied in the same building to assess their impact on indoor climate.

Comparison of ventilation systems in an experimental building in Helsinki. Ilmanvaihtojarjestelmavertailu koerakennuskohteessa kasarminkatu 24

Performs an investigation concerning the operation of ventilation systems in an old building (a museum) after extensive repairs have been made. The new ventilation system is a supply and exhaust type. Measures ventilation rate and energy consumption for 1. mechanical air supply and and exhaust 2. Mechanical exhaust only 3. Exhaust from the secondary space only with other ventilation ducts closed. Uses nitrous oxide as tracer gas. Measurement of radon concentration shows that concentration is lower in 1 than 2, in spite of the fact that the air change rate is the same in both (0.7 ach).
