Characterisation of garage-air recirculation in a new building using a tracer.

Air recirculation in the new office and laboratory building of the Norwegian Institute for AirResearch was discovered and characterised from a leaking sulphur hexafluoride cylinderstored in the garage. The garage/staging area was located at the far end of the right wing ofthe three-storey building, and was used for loading/unloading of equipment and for storage ofequipment and compressed gas cylinders. Sulphur hexafluoride tracer was detected in thecorridor on the ground floor right wing leading to the central reception area.

Road traffic pollution and its effect on the internal environment of buildings.

Indoor and outdoor concentrations of various pollutants were measured in a naturally ventilated building in the West End of Edinburgh during and after the period of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to assess the effect upon indoor pollution levels of the closure of some streets in the city. The relationships between indoor and outdoor air qualities in respect of traffic-generated pollutants were studied and the building's relative attenuation of external pollution levels investigated.

Spatial variability of pollution induced by traffic in street canyon.

Concentration of pollutants produced by car traffic in a street below the roof level has large spatial variations. In a street, pollutants are diluted by the turbulent air flow which is induced by the wind speed above the roof level, and also produced by car displacement. The airflow structure is in relation with street size and building shape. Particularly strong gradients of concentrations can be observed vertically and also horizontally in front and along buildings where are set up ventilation inlets and windows.

Respirable particulates and oxides of nitrogen measured inside a building alongside a busy road.

Gravimetric determination and continuous monitoring of respirable dust in air has revealed that there are high levels of dust at some roadside and indoor locations in urban areas. Furthermore, where high dust levels are measured in roadside samples, high concentrations are also measured in adjacent buildings. The dust levels measured inside a building have been shown to be very closely correlated to ambient levels, and traffic emissions, particularly from diesel vehicles, are the principal source of respirable particulates.

Energy use for ventilation systems in underground car parks.

The use of energy for operating ventilation systems in underground car parks in Hong Kong is considered. A site survey has been carried out in 22 underground car parks. The physical size, configurations, and electrical rating of ventilation fans were the main mailers of interest. The indoor thermal environments, carbon monoxide concentrations, and operation of ventilation systems were examined. Mathematica/ expressions are developed and the predicted results examined for another 54 underground car parks.
