Developing a New Passive Tracer Gas Test for Air Change Rate Measurement

This paper describes the ongoing development of a new tracer gas test (TGT) for total air change rates measurement. This new TGT, intended for use in large-scale IAQ assessments and based on constant tracer injection, employs an alternative tracer gas that is more adequate than the currently employed SF6 and perfluorocarbons and that can be co-captured and co-analyzed along with commonly assessed VOCs using a commercial passive IAQ sampler. Via literature study and lab testing, decane-D22 was found to be a suitable tracer substance.


A successful Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) surveillance plan is essential for healthy and safe workplaces;yet it is costly to sample all air pollutants of the entire community. In Hong Kong, a voluntary IAQcertification scheme for workplaces proposes the acceptable concentration levels of nine commonindoor air pollutants, namely carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), respirable suspendedparticulates (RSP), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organiccompounds (TVOC), radon (Rn) and airborne bacteria count (ABC).

Indoor air quality in primary schools.

The objective of this paper was to verify that problem of indoor air pollution is present in primary school in Yugoslavia. Indoor air pollutant levels of sulfur-dioxide, soot, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde, and air-microflora was determined in different places of school environment. The average indoor level of sulphur dioxide and soot in primary schools were comparatively high. Determined average levels of carbon monoxide were from 13 .2 - 31. 8 mg/m3, levels of nitrogen dioxide were 20 - 62 μg/m3 and levels of formaldehyde: 0.01 - 0.83 μg/m3.
