Application of particle image velocimetry for the measurement of the airflow characteristics in an aircraft cabin

Velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the airflow inside a section of a narrow body (737) aircraft cabin were measured using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. In this paper the measurement technique is described and the results are presented and discussed. The purpose of this study was to provide accurate experimental data for validation of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes developed for this application.

Investigation of cabin air quality in commercial aircrafts.

This project covered 16 aircrafts including both smoking and non-smoking flights from June 1996 to August 1997. The parameters concerned were carbon dioxide (C02), humidity, temperature, carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (03), bacteria, fungus, and respirable suspended particulate (RSP). Compared with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standard, C02, CO and ozone levels on all flights were within such standards. Peak levels of C02 and particulate were observed during both boarding and deboarding periods.

Measurement of thermal comfort and indoor air quality aboard 43 flights on commercial airlines.

This paper reports the results of thermal comfort and indoor air quality measurements aboard aircraft from 43 flights on commercial airlines with a duration of more than 1 h. The measurements were performed continuously during the whole flight (from the departure gate to the arrival gate), and the parameters monitored were temperature, relative humidity and carbon dioxide concentration. The results were then compared with the ASHRAE Standards for the thermal comfort (ASHRAE Standard 55-92) and indoor air quality (ASHRAE Standard 62-89).

Aircraft cabin air quality

This document is primarily intended to address industry and government questions regarding the impacts of recent Congressional activity on the subject of air quality. Air conditioning system performance levels on currently operational aircraft are documented. The effects upon aircraft design and operation are addressed, along with rough estimates of the economic consequences of proposed requirements.
