Environmental assessment of energy conservation technologies for heating and ventilation - A case study -

More than three quarters of all consumed energy in buildings are used for heating, ventilation and sanitary hot water preparation. Energy conservation on these areas has a great potential for reduction of fossil fuels consumption and could greatly contribute to environmental assessment. In striving for reduction of energy use in buildings new criteria are enforced as a measure for energy use in buildings.

Enerkenn : web-based method to generate specific energy consumption data for evaluation and optimization of office building operation

Insufficient concern about energy efficiency during the design and/or the operation of a building is the main reason for the high energy consumption of existing buildings. The knowledge of facility managers about the real energy consumption is often poor, regular documentation or analysis of consumption data are not existing. Enerkenn therefore intents to develop a procedure to record and evaluate relevant energy data and to find out energy saving potentials with environmentally conscious and economically reasonable accuracy.

Energy savings in multi-functional buildings : an historical context for a case study in Rome

The historical headquarter of Italian Ministero degli Esteri (Ministry of External Affairs) in Rome named as "Palazzo della Farnesina" is a very large (about 700.000 m 3 of volume) and complex multi-functional building.The objective of present study, commissioned by Ministry of Environment, is to evaluate different energy saving strategies in this building achievable by the implementation of retrofit actions. At first, the seasonal energy consumption obtained by the existing cooling and heating systems has been estimated.

Energy efficiency and renewables in new housing in Ireland

Approximately 300 low energy houses have been built in the Republic of Ireland by the multi-national CRH Plc and South Dublin County Council as part of a co-ordinated European Commission-supported demonstration project, RE-Start (Renewable Energies Strategies and Technology Applications for Regenerating Towns).

Energy certification procedure for educational buildings

Energy conservation represents a main concern for the environmental, economical and social problems. In this field, educational buildings are large consumer of energy and in many countries need retrofits. In this paper, we propose an energy certification procedure for educational buildings which aims to improve learning and teaching environment while reducing energy consumption. The developed procedure is composed of different levels including a phase of diagnosis and then a phase of calculation of the energy consumption and the energy conservation possibilities.

Effect of a needle heat exchanger on the release of microbes into supply air

The needle heat exchanger (acts as a pre filter EU3) was installed in front of the glass fiber used as a fine filter (EU7) in the supply air chamber. Thus, the temperature of the supply air increased and the relative humidity of the fine filter next to the heating unit decreased. The aim of this study was to examine how the installation of the needle heat exchanger effects on the microbial growth and release in the fine filter. The relative humidity of the fine filter in the supply air unit fell below 70 % during different seasons.

Development of an Integrated Scheme for the Energy Efficient Refurbishment of Existing Settlements

The White Paper on renewable Energy states that the total energy requirements in thedomestic sector could be reduced by 50% in EU until the year 2010, half of which could be accounts for by introducing passive and active solar technologies in buildings. A project has been undertaken with the aim to study and propose global strategies, tools and guidelines that will promote the efficient and cost effective global implementation of advanced systems and techniques in the refurbishment of existing settlements in Europe.

Calculation of turbulent flow for building ventilation by means of jet profiles with regard to wall influences

Basis of this work was the question of the formation of air flows in ventilated test rooms with regard to wall influences. In order to determine the effects of the room geometry and the air inlet angle a on the airflow a jet which was placed just below the ceiling was observed in symmetrically designed test rooms. Since there is a correspondence between measurement and CFD simulation, velocity vectors are extrapolated from the CFD simulation and analysed for different geometrical data.

An energy conscious house for Malta

Winner of First Prize in the 2 nd Commonwealth Inter-school Design Competition organised by theCommonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), 1991. The winning design was a pair of houses with wind towers. It was praised by the jury as an innovative and original solution to the brief recognising local conditions, elegantly and thoughtfully presented. The planning of the dwelling pleasantly reflected the local lifestyle with an interesting internal environment.

Source book for efficient air duct systems in Europe

The Airways project was set up to provide design guidance and maintain afficient air duct systems, and to bring to light the energy saving opportunities in parallel with health, safety and comfort issues. The results of this work have been published in a book targeted at decision-makers concerned with inddor climate issues. It provides condensed information on better air duct system design and how this can be achieved.
