Effectiveness of energy conservation measures in residential sector of Japanese cities

Energy consumption by residential sector of 20 Japanese cities was modeled at the city-scale. In the model, households were classified into 228 categories based on the family and building type. We evaluated the effectiveness of energy conservation measures, such as improving energy efficiency of home appliances, improving heat insulation of buildings, changing preset temperature, and all family members watching TV together. In addition, we also discussed differences in energy saving effects between cities.

Identify contaminant sources in airliner cabins by inverse modeling of CFD with information from a sensor

In case contaminants are found in an aircraft cabin, it is useful to identify the contaminant source location and strength. This can be done through inverse Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Since inverse CFD equations are ill-posed, this study proposes to solve a quasi-reversibility (QR) equation and a pseudo-reversibility (PR) equation. The QR equation improves the numerical stability by replacing the second-order diffusion term with a  fourth-order stabilization term in the governing equation of contaminant transport.

DAYLIGHT1-2-3 – A state-of-the-art daylighting/energy analysis software for initial design investigations

This paper provides an overview of Daylight1-2-3, a new daylighting/energy analysis software for design professionals and architectural students with an interest in daylighting and sustainable design, but no required previous knowledge of either daylighting concepts or simulations. The initial version of Daylight 1-2-3 focuses on private offices, open-plan offices, and classrooms.

Simulation of energy management systems in EnergyPlus

An energy management system (EMS) is a dedicated computer that can be programmed to control all of a building’s energy-related systems, including heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water, interior lighting, exterior lighting, on-site power generation, and mechanized systems for shading devices, window actuators, and double facade elements. Recently a new module for simulating an EMS was added to the EnergyPlus whole-building energy simulation program.

Natural ventilation airflow rate is generally calculated using indoor and outdoor temperature difference without consideration of heat balance based on the vertical air temperature distribution in simple analytical method.

Analysis of building energy efficiency strategies for the hot summer and cold winter zone in China

In this paper, three typical cities (Shanghai, Changsha and Chongqing) in the hot summer and cold winter climate zone of China was selected to study and the energy consumption of a model building in these three locations was simulated by eQuest software. After comparing the result, the differences among them were shown in this paper. From the viewpoint of building energy consumption, solar radiation may be a positive factor in winter but negative in summer.

Computer model of a university building using the EnergyPlus program

This paper presents the development of a computer model of an academic building using the EnergyPlus program and its calibration with monitored data. The new Concordia Sciences Building (CSB), located in Montreal, has a total floor area of 32,000 m2. The size and the complexity of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and heat recovery systems make the modeling process a challenge and an excellent opportunity to evaluate the capabilities and features of EnergyPlus in this particular context.

Comparison of crowd simulation for building evacuation and an alternative approach

This paper presents an overview of crowd simulation models, their limitations, and an alternative agentbased approch. First we introduce several methods and then we focus on two widely used and validated simulation tools that use grid-based models. We discus the artifacts that these models introduce regarding the way they treat the space and the implication that this has in the movement of the agents during the simulation. We also describe the limitations that current commercial software tools have in terms of simulating human psychology and physiology.

Numerical prediction of natural convection occurring in building components using lattice Boltzmann method

A double population Lattice Boltzmann is used to solve the problem of the diffrentially heated cavity The use of a non-uniform grid makes it possible to validate the approach for laminar and transitional flows and (103≤Ra≤108). The results obtained, concerning the heat and mass transfers are in concordance with those of the literature. This comparison makes it possible to validate this type of approach for the prediction of anisothermal flows.
